What's a FAQ?

Like it says at the top of this page, a FAQ is a list of Frequently Asked Questions. It's usually pronounced either "eff-ay-kyoo", or just "fak".

How frequently are these questions really asked?

Okay, you've got me. Not many of them have ever been asked before. Since PageThing 2 is just being released (as I write this), I've got to try to guess what some of the most frequently asked questions will be. As such, this is a pre-emptive FAQ.

Where can I find new versions of PageThing?

At the PageThing homepage, which is at this URL:
http://www.matt-ridley.com/software/pagething/pagething.html

How fast does PageThing make pages?

That depends on your Macintosh, and also on the number of images/pages, and on the settings you choose. Generally, PageThing will make anything from 2 to 14 pages per second, with an average of about 10-12 pages per second.

PageThing is making pages much slower than usual; what's happening?

You're probably making a lot of pages (more than 150), and you've got the Numerical Links checkbox checked - this can slow PageThing down to one or two pages per second. Remember that every one of your pages will be linked from every other one, in a huge list of linked numbers - which can look silly if you've got a lot of pages. It may be better to disable the Numerical Links checkbox, which will speed up the creation of pages considerably.

How can I use the default settings just one time, without affecting my saved settings?

Just disable the "Save settings when quitting" checkbox (choosing "Disable Save" from the dialog you'll see), then click the Defaults button to reset all your settings to the defaults. Since those default settings won't be saved when you quit, next time you launch PageThing your previous saved settings will be loaded again.

How come the last choice in the "Show pages in" popup changes?

Because it's whatever application you chose as the creator of the pages in the main PageThing window. If you chose GoLive, then the last choice in the "Show pages in" popup will be GoLive (see picture below); if you chose BBEdit, the last choice will be BBEdit.

The first four choices are always Netscape, (Microsoft Internet) Explorer, iCab and AOL. You choice, and the value of the "Show pages in" checkbox, will be saved by PageThing when you quit.

How does PageThing store my settings and choices?

PageThing uses two files (both in the Preferences folder of the active System Folder) to store your settings and options. The file called "PageThing Prefs" stores the value of the "Save settings when quitting" checkbox in the main window, the value of the "Show pages in:" checkbox in the "Pages complete" dialog, and also the browser or application chosen in the popup menu in the "Pages complete" dialog. Every other settings (all the settings specific to your web gallery) are stored in the "PageThing Settings" file.

You must not edit those files manually; let PageThing manage them itself. If you even change the filetype or creator-code of those files, PageThing won't read them. If you change their content with a text-editor or other utility, PageThing could crash.

What is PageThing made with?

A combination of Metrowerks CodeWarrior Pro 5 and REAL Software REALbasic 2 Pro.

Will you make a Windows version?

I don't have any immediate plans to do so. However, I might make one in the future.

How can I get in touch with the author of PageThing?

Just visit the "Contact" page at my website, which is at this URL:

Why is this FAQ is so short?

Because PageThing 2 hasn't been around long enough for people to contact me with many questions yet. Once they do, I'll add the most common questions to this FAQ.

How do I get an answer to another question that isn't listed here?

Just contact me and ask your question. See here for how to contact me.

How do I report a bug, or request a feature?

Again, just contact me. See here for how to contact me.
